In November 1986 I had the opportunity to visit my first State of America. It was Hawaii. I traveled there with my father-in-law, Ron Ross, who was a guest speaker at a missions conference. We stayed with a family who served with Youth with a Mission.
While watching the 6 o’clock news on the first night there I was saddened by the way the American news media were blatantly attacking the office of the President, in particular Ronald Reagan. I can’t remember the details of the news story but I can remember the affect it had on my hosts. Heavy hearted they went to prayer around the dinner table for the leadership on their country. After that I went to my room and wrote these words.
It dawned on me today that I will basically be “on the road” till December. That means living with a guitar, a travel bag and a Bible. That means learning to be patient at airports and doing many miles across Australia and America. That means living one day at a time and seeking the Lord for all He has for that day. It means never forgetting that “people matter most”. That means missing home and even missing the football finals back in Australia. But that’s OK. The gift of travel is amazing.
Turning 50 and the road ahead.
Faith drives us to think bigger than yesterday, to believe beyond the here and now. It drives us to trust more in God and less in our own self made achievements.
As I head towards the road sign with a big “50″ on it I am convinced the best years still lay ahead. I do confess there have been some lonely times in this work. As a man you never talk about that stuff. You just get on with it. But I want to be honest and real as I know that is so important to genuine ministry.
