Refuge and Trust

The verse at the very centre of the Bible is Psalm 118:8 ” It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put your trust in man”.

More and more I know that nothing else matters.. only the life I live and the stuff I do in Jesus Name. We can spend our entire lives working like slaves for a corrupt system, indebted to a greedy manipulative society that exploits the poor and oppresses people. The law condemns but God’s grace sets us free. Governments strive to imprison us but Jesus sets the captive free. When we put our trust in the systems of man we will be destroyed by them…. But when we take refuge in the Lord we will always be safe.

In Australia this past week the leadership of our nation changed hands in the ugliest and most malicious, deceptive way I have ever seen. In one night the man who the nation had elected as leader was gone in a callous, soul destroying move.. by his own friends. It reminded me of the dangers of trusting in man and not in the Lord. Even though I was not a big supporter of the Prime Minister’s policies I was ashamed to be an Australian if that is how we dishonour our leaders. But… I am even more compelled that I desperately need the Lordship of Jesus over my life and not be held prisoner to the godless ways of man. Life is so unpredictable and at times cruel, which is why we need a faith in Christ to carry us through.

There’s a sandwich board out the front of the old newspaper store in Port Fairy, Victoria that reads….

“May your life be full of enough joy to keep you smiling… enough struggles to keep you strong and enough sorrow to keep you human”.

I know that unless God is building the house.. we are labouring in vain. Even with all the challenges of life you may have at the moment… take refuge in knowing Jesus, let Him be the life source that empowers you and revives you. Not Governments…Not religion.. not meetings… not worship songs…. Just Jesus. Take refuge in Him.
