A prayer by Billy Graham

“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says. ‘Woe to those who call evil good,’ but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbour’s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time honoured values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!”

I came across this prayer by Billy Graham a few weeks ago. With all that is taking place in the world today I felt it was important to share.

Some times it is easy to point the accusing finger at our political leaders and condemn them for foolish decisions based on their manipulation, power and greed. Nothing has changed since the days of the Bible. ‘When the righteous are in authority the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people suffer”. Proverbs 29.2

But as I read Dr. Graham’s prayer I am more convicted to look at my own life and search my own heart. I am a sinner saved by the amazing grace, forgiveness and love of Jesus Christ. As our world rushes towards self destruction I need Jesus more and more. I need His presence in my life every day. He sets me free from unrighteousness and sin… and fills me with vision to serve others.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrew 12: 1-3
