SAVING THE LOST
Christ’s call is to save the lost, not the stiff-necked; He came not to call scoffers but sinners to repentance; not to build and furnish comfortable chapels, churches, and cathedrals at home in which to rock Christian professors to sleep by means of clever essays, stereotyped prayers, and artistic musical performances, but to capture men from the devil’s clutches and the very jaws of Hell. This can be accomplished only by a red-hot, unconventional, unfettered devotion, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
C.T. Studd (1860-1931) a famous cricketer and English missionary.
C.T. Studd was born into an extremely turbulent decade in history. There were massive changes taking place with cultural, social and political upheavals in Europe and America. There were revolutions in Germany and the Ottoman Empire. The abolition of slavery finally took place in Europe and America. The Civil war between the Northern and Southern States lead to massive deaths and the destruction of many cities in America. There were advancements in military technology such as iron and steel warships. After the war turmoil continued with the rise of white supremacist organizations like the Ku Klux Klan and the issue of granting civil rights to black people freed from slavery. It was a complicated and confusing world.
In his teenage years C.T. Studd or “Charlie” was destined to become one of England’s greatest cricketers. He was the son of a successful race horse stud owner Edward Studd, who had made his fortune in India. But after attending the Moody Sankey revival in London in the spring of 1875 Charlie’s father came to faith in Christ. One year later his three sons all became believers. In 1885 Charlie left behind him his cricket career, his Eton and Trinity College degree’s and set sail for China as a missionary. Before his life was over, he had also brought Christ to India, challenged students across America to Christian service, and pioneered a great work in Africa which was to become the Worldwide Evangelization Crusade. (WEC)
I want to be like C.T.Studd. In a world of madness and mediocrity, I want to know that all I am called to do is serve Jesus. Nothing else really matters. As C.T. Studd once said: ”If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.”
Matthew 6:33 simply says: ”Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these other things will be added unto you”.
I like that!! Let us not be distracted by the turbulence of our times, the wars, the changes, the upheavals of these modern days and set our sights on the work of the Kingdom.
Have a great week.
Godspeed,
