Heroes
David Cummings and Ced Grace were good mates back in the early 1960’s. They both helped to pioneer Wycliffe Bible Translators / SIL and a missions town called Ukarumpa in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. They were two of my heroes when I was a boy. When we moved back to Australia due to my mother’s mystery illness in the early 70’s, we became neighbours with the Cummings family in a small country town called Kangaroo Ground, Victoria, where the Australian headquarters for Wycliffe was based. It was there I gave my life to Christ and learned to play guitar. David Cummings went on to become the international director of Wycliffe Bible Translators and today is involved as a mentor to many ministries and business people, and a great leader of men. Dad cared for my mother who fought a 20 year battle with a brain tumor till she went home to the Lord in 1989. David and Dad are still great mates, even in their 70’s they are still passionate for missions and for people. I am thankful to God for men who have walked the road ahead of me and stayed true to their faith under every circumstance. They are heroes.
We all have heroes: Some of mine are the apostle Paul, King David, Joseph, Joshua, Abraham and Sarah, Ruth and Esther. The Bible is filled with ordinary people who allowed the intervention of God to use them to impact their generation. Let’s do the same.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Hebrews 12: 1-2.
Godspeed,
